What exactly is Spiritual Direction?

About

I like to describe Spiritual Direction (SD) as a relational practice in which a trained spiritual director listens attentively to and companions respectfully with someone who desires to explore their relationship with God.

How does Spiritual Direction compare to Therapy?

Both SD and Therapy offer you the opportunity to explore your relationship with yourself and others with the anticipation of greater clarity and healing.

Similarities between SD and Therapy:

  • Confidentiality

  • Reflective Listening

  • Devoted Attention

Differences between SD and Therapy:

  • Motivations

    • For therapy- a life crisis or trauma

    • For SD- desire to explore one's spiritual life

  • In Session Objectives

    • For therapy- appropriate interventions

    • For SD- active listening and reflection
